Degree in Geography
240 credits - Faculty of Philosophy and Arts
The general aim of the Degree in Geography is to train professionals in the necessary scientific knowledge to understand, interpret, analyse and diagnose the territory surrounding us, both in environmental and social aspects.
Graduates will be able to work in areas linked to natural resources, population, urban development, town and country planning, the environment, landscaping, transport and tourism.
They will be able to access different fields as professionals such as: town and country planning; cartography and geographic information systems; analysis of the physical and social environment; teaching; research, and postgraduate studies in social and natural sciences.
Class time and field work are combined during the programme: field research is one of the main pillars of teaching in the programme. As with other UIB degrees, the ability to understand, speak and write in English is developed.

- CS1 -Students have shown they possess and understand knowledge in an area of study, starting from secondary education level and reaching a level which, although based on advanced textbooks, includes aspects that involve knowledge from the vanguard in their area of study.
- CS2 - Students know how to apply knowledge their job or vocation professionally, and possess the skills generally demonstrated through producing and defending arguments and solving problems in their area of study.
- CS3 - Students have the skill to bring together and interpret relevant data (normally in their area of study) to issue opinions that include a reflection on important social, scientific or ethical issues.
- CS4 - Students are able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to a specialised and more general audience.

- GS1 - Being able to conceptualise patters, process, interactions and changes in the physical and human environment, both understood as a system within a wide range of spatial scales.
- GS2 - Acquiring a critical awareness of the importance of timescale in physical and human processes and their interactions, as well as how they operate at local, regional and global level.
- GS3 – Working in a professional context, applying foci to Geography that incorporate historical and social context.
- GS4 - Demonstrating knowledge and critical understanding of the representation methods of human and physical environments, as well as attaining mastery of technology linked to acquiring and analysing geographical data, such as statistical, laboratory, quantitative analytical, computer application and remote detection methods.
- GS5 - Applying the knowledge, methodologies and techniques acquired during the degree in a professional setting, developed to a high level of responsibility, ethical commitment and the ability to be a part of multi-disciplinary teams.
Specific Skills
- SS1 - Acquiring knowledge of English to an intermediate level, to understand, speak and write in the language in a way that ensure understanding, expression and application of specific geographical terminology in the main professional fields of the discipline.
- SS2 - Acquiring core knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the discipline's different areas of focus, including those linked to wider epistemological fields in natural sciences, economics and law, and the humanities.
- SS3 - Applying knowledge of the ways in which social and land organisation of societies influences the use of their resources, human occupancy of land, population mobility and the functional diversification of space.
- SS4 - Demonstrating global knowledge of construction of places and environments outside one's own immediate everyday experience, and understanding how a specific location has been constructed and is permanently renewed by physical, environmental, biotic, social, historical, economic and cultural processes.
- SS5 - Properly understanding Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to compile, process, analyse and interpret information and to answer geographical questions.
- SS6 - Applying the main technologies dedicated to studying reciprocal relationships in the physical and human environment, especially those for assessing the environment impact of anthropic activities, their impact on the landscape and the transmission of scientific content so that it aids application in academic, professional, educational and scientific settings.
