The faculty of Economics and Business along with the faculty of tourism have designed a curriculum structured over 5 years with a total of 312 credits. In this way, students have the possibility to obtain two degrees in a reasonable period of time. This proposal reflects the demands of the professional world on these islands which is made up, in large part, of large tourism institutions and companies and which focuses on the shift towards sustainable tourism and is in line with the internationalisation that the university includes as one of its core strategies. Thus, this double degree has a multilingual focus; special attention is given to English, which is the language used to teach certain subjects.
What skills will you acquire?
You will acquire the capacities necessary to be a practical person with a critical point of view and the abilities to: organize and adapt, identify and foresee pertinent economic problems, and discuss and select between different possible options for resolving and evaluating results. You will also learn skills specifically related to managing tourist businesses and working with tourism-based economies, as well as developing language (English, French, and/or German), law, geography, and cultural heritage management skills.
What profile should you have?
The double degree in Economics and Tourism is suitable for those students interested in developing a professional career in tourism enterprises or in public administrations that work on promoting tourism. Students must be willing to cultivate personal initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit in the tourism and business fields, as well as have an ability for analysis, criticism and synthesis. It should be underlined that developing a positive attitude towards the tourism sphere will be important, as well as international relations, dialogue, communication, the ability to work as part of a team, problem-solving and particularly, knowledge of languages.
The double degree in Economics and Tourism aims to provide students with specific training in managing businesses and institutions that are part of the most important economic sector in the Balearic Islands: tourism. The training received by students combines both theoretical and practical elements, with a structure characterised mainly by a multi-disciplinary nature combining:
- Main core training where students will attain, amongst other things, the necessary skills to become a practical individual with an ability to organise and adapt, having a critical overview and being able to identify and plan for important financial problems, debate and select different alternatives to resolve these issues and assess the results. In turn, students will be able to understand and express themselves in English, both written and spoken, so as to guarantee their own success in an ever more globalised society.
- Language training (English, French and/or German) specifically applied to the tourism sector: specific vocabulary for tourism businesses, presentation techniques, common expressions, etc.
- Training in company law and specific tourism law (analysing the specific legal framework of the tourism sector), the geography of tourism (land resource planning and management) and cultural heritage management.
- The practical application of knowledge acquired on the degree programme through work experience at a renowned tourism business or institution, both on the islands and overseas, lasting around 4-5 months.
- The Final Degree Project where students will use the knowledge they have acquired throughout the degree programme.
