In order to be awarded the master's degree, students shall pass 60 ECTS credits as follows:

30 credits from the mandatory subjects comprising the core programme and taken by all students. They provide an advanced approach to the concepts, theories and problems enabling them to use research into social cognition and its applicability for understanding social and political problems. In turn, they also equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities for interdisciplinary research in the field. They are taught in the first semester on the programme for students to take them first.

21 credits from elective subjects which are structured into more specific and advance thematic areas within each of the relevant disciplines for the field.

Students must take at least one of the advanced training subjects in research as part of these 21 credits:

  • Advanced Research into Cognitive Psychology
  • Advanced Research into Social and Political Studies.

These subjects are organised into advanced seminars where content may be updated every year, in accordance with developments in research and lecturer availability. They are taught throughout the second semester on the programme.

Moreover, the 21 elective credits provide students with the chance to select one of the two learning pathways on the programme:

  • Research: students must take the Research Practicals subject for this pathway
  • Professional: students must take the External Academic Placements subject for this pathway.

Students may also decide to not select a pathway. In this instance, they will not have to take these practical subjects.

The master's thesis (TFM) is worth 9 ECTS credits and comprises undertaking research supervised by a researcher-doctor, submitting the work undertaken in report format and taking a public viva examination.
