Learning Goals
The learning goals on the Master’s Degree in Cognition and Society are:
- Provide interdisciplinary training to study cognitive functions and methods of social organisation
- Analyse human behaviour in a three-pronged approach: (i) the main cognitive functions; (ii) as an integral part of a specific society within the globalisation of human groups; and (iii) as an outcome of evolutionary and development processes
- Provide an up-to-date overview on current knowledge in cognitive evolution, social cognition and their sociopolitical impact
- Teach research techniques from the programme’s core disciplines (social and political sciences, moral and political philosophy, and cognitive neuroscience and psychology)
- Investigate the fundamentals of social cognition and their link to neuronal fundamentals
- Understand the link between neurobiological and physiological processes, cognitive processes and the foundations of human social life
- Broaden knowledge about social cognition processes and their practical applicability
- Work on empirical approaches to aesthetics and art, and its implications and applicability in the fields of advertising, ergonomics, architecture and fashion
- Observe the basic processes involved in decision-making, as well as analyse their applicability
- Understand the emotional and psychological dimension to sociopolitical dynamics
- Explain the psychological foundations of behaviour and communication in new digital communication methods
- Analyse major social and political transformations within a prism of social and political theory and philosophy
- Analyse the sociopolitical and democratic impact of new social communication methods
- Examine asymmetrical and hierarchical relations within the social order, particularly with regard to sex and gender
- Address the normative dimension of new moral conflicts, multiple perspectives and implicit moral judgements
- Analyse the moral dimension of moral conflicts played out between birth and death
- Explore new methods of critical social and political thought.
Graduate Profile
The Master’s Degree in Cognition and Society is geared towards training future professionals in human behavioural analysis across cognitive, social and evolutionary aspects. Programme graduates will be able to:
- Analyse cognitive capabilities and their impact on different behavioural and social organisation methods
- Use multiple social research methodologies and techniques to analyse the biological and social dimension to human cognition
- Design and plan research projects into social cognition, its sociopolitical impact and the new social, political and moral challenges in today’s society
- Understand the neuronal foundations of social cognition processes and identify decision-making processes
- Apply the acquired knowledge about decision-making, social cognition and empirical approaches to aesthetics and art in order to address moral conflict analysis and different sociopolitical changes
- Identify the main sociopolitical challenges, as well as different methods of critical social and political thought today
- Examine the impact from social and political transformations in contemporary society, particularly with regard to gender and class
- Develop the ability for independent, creative and critical research
- Assess public policies and their sociopolitical impact from the perspective of social cognition.
