Learning Goals
The Master's Degree in General Health Psychology mainly aims to train students as health psychologists and qualify them for the regulated profession of general health psychologist (Order ECD/1070/2013 of 12th June, BOE [Official State Gazette] of 14th June 2023).
The programme enables graduates for contract or independent professional practice (and to register their psychology practice as a health centre). The professional services of general health psychologists include psychological assessments and interventions, and research activities in the field of health psychology, provided they are not inherent to other health professionals.
More specifically, the main training goals on the programme are:
- Teaching a comprehensive health approach that includes biopsychosocial components, in accordance with the guidelines established by the WHO
- Explaining and developing interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to appropriately handle emotions in order to effectively interact with patients, family members and caregivers in the processes of identifying problems, making assessments, communicating diagnoses, and performing and monitoring psychological interventions
- Teaching and delving deeper into the foundations, procedures and techniques for assessments and interventions in general health psychology, with a view to dealing with behavioural disorders and psychological factors linked to health problems
- Teaching students how to carry out promotional and educational activities related to personal and community psychological health
- Explaining and underpinning the foundations of bioethics and how to deliberate in professional practice, in order to ensure professional health practice aligns with what is set out in general legislation on health professions
- In turn, the training on the programme will not merely take a general approach on core content in clinical and health psychology. It will also include, as far as possible and in line with the inherent limitations of the programme's length, more specific issues linked to concerns in society today. Here, the programme has committed to providing particular attention to the victims of sexual violence, in line with the latest ANECA guidelines (https://www.aneca.es/documents/20123/63546/UEEII_Guia+de+Apoyo_v2_21022023.pdf/9b2b275c-7313-3f5b-ece7-b5fdeb8763f8?t=1728891438958) and what is set out in Article 25.1 in Organic Law 10/2022 of 6th September on the Comprehensive Guarantee of Sexual Freedom. In this vein, the recommendation is included in the programme's skills and the learning outcomes for the Health Psychology Intervention module.
Graduate Profile
The graduate profile is set by Order ECD/1070/2013 of 12th June (BOE of 14th June 2013). Graduates will be awarded the official Master's Degree in General Health Psychology and be qualified to practice as health professionals in the regulated profession of General Health Psychologist.
