Overview of the research activity

GIST research focuses on the territorial transformation that the Balearic archipelago has undergone since the second half of the twentieth century, framed in the context of political and economic relations that emerged after the Second World War and its evolution to the present day. .

The research carried out so far reveals a particular 'Balearic route' of insertion in the general process of globalization. A route conditioned by relations with Western Europe, the insular condition of the Balearic Islands and the relative proximity to the Central European tourist and real estate markets.

The most recent projects developed by the group focus, on the one hand, on the analysis of the transformation of the Balearic and Canary Island cities with regard to public spaces and housing and, on the other, on the transformation of tourist areas of the Spanish coast.
