Learning Goals
The general aim of the Master’s Degree in Marine Ecology is to train specialists and future professionals in marine ecology, providing them with the knowledge to study marine environments, their processes and problems. This will foster mechanisms in know-how in Balearic society to ensure the capacity for immediate response to environmental degradation, diminished marine resources, and the fragmentation of habitats and ecosystems. These future professionals will acquire knowledge about the marine world and aspects concerning its biological, physical, chemical, geological, management and exploitation uses both in terms of physical space and dynamics. They will also develop positive attitudes to sustainable development and learn work techniques enabling them to properly undertake research and professional activities linked to oceans.
In order to attain its general aim, the programme provides participants with complete, multidisciplinary, and up-to-date training covering the basic, advanced, methodological, and applied knowledge that exists in the field of marine ecology. The programme has the following key aspects:
- Providing multidisciplinary training that gives students an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of each of the different kinds of marine ecosystems and their biological characteristics, coastline uses, and global impacts and changes which these ecosystems undergo, and how to manage living resources
- Providing advanced training to apply knowledge in solving ecological problems in different settings (research centres, public management, businesses, etc.) and contributing knowledge to multidisciplinary contexts
- Analysing real case studies and solving problems linked to each case via a project undertaken at different research centres and universities.
Graduate Profile
The programme’s main aim is to train scientific and specialised professionals in theoretical and applied marine sciences, as well as a range of other fields, including: basic research, aquaculture, fisheries management, marine reserves, comprehensive coastal management, environmental protection, environmental impact assessment, emissary dumping, red tides, invasive species, and the detection and monitoring of contaminants. This is in addition to the range of issues related to climate change and the global quality of the marine environment, all applicable in the public, environmental, industrial, services, and academic sectors, and at public and private research centres.
