The main objective of this study programme is to ensure that future professionals are able to work in the different social and institutional contexts related to health on the local, national, and international levels while carrying out the multidimensional responsibilities inherent in their roles. There are a large number of employment opportunities in nursing, and it is a licenced, regulated, and closed healthcare profession.
The nursing degree, which allows for graduates to practice the regulated profession in Spain, complies with the following regulations regarding the professional career:
- Order 12388 CIN/2134/2008 of 3 July which lays out the requirements for the verification of official university degrees that allow for the nursing profession to be carried out. Official State Gazette (BOE) No. 174.
- Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 20 October which lays out the planning and organisation required for official higher level education in Spain.
- Law 44/2003 of 21 November on planning and organisation of healthcare professions.
- Directive 2005/35/EC regarding the recognition of professional qualifications.
- Directive 77/452/EEC and 77/453/EEC regarding the profession of general care nurse.
- RD 55/2005 of 21 January. Specifications sheet proposing undergraduate university degrees.
What skills will you acquire?
Upon completion of the programme, nursing students will be able to play an important role in health promotion, disease prevention, and treating persons with illnesses or disabilities at any stage of life.
What profile should you have?
To ensure easier adaptation for new students, the following personal and academic characteristics are specified for the ideal candidate on the curriculum, which are closely linked to the Nursing graduate profile:
- An interest in scientific knowledge, aspects linked to health and social problems. A social and ethical commitment.
- An ability for observation, empathy, communication and interpersonal relations. Teamwork. An ability for analysis and reflection, problem solving and taking decisions.
- Skilled in oral and written expression in Spanish and Catalan. Skilled in handling basic computer tools. An ability to understand, speak and write in English.
What career opportunities will you have?
Nursing offers a wide variety of career options both in Spain and in other European countries. It is a licenced, closed, and regulated health profession with its own professional field, as set out in the Health Professions Organisation Act. Areas for professional practice include: healthcare (primary, specialised, public health), teaching, management, and research.
After completing this programme, graduates have the option to sign up for:
- Official university master's and doctorate programmes (Regulatory agreement of 22 November 2011 which ratified the administrative regulation regarding the teaching of official bachelor's and master's degree programmes at the University of the Balearic Islands and Decree 43/2015 of 2 February which amends Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 29 October which lays out the regulations for official university teachings, and Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January which regulates the teaching of official doctorate programmes), and
- The nurse practitioner programme, offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (Royal Decree 450/2005 of 22 April regarding nurse practitioners (B.O.I. of 6 May)).
Travel and Learn
The UIB offers students the chance to take part in different exchange and mobility programmes:
- Exchange and mobility programmes: to complete part of your studies at another university in Spain, the European Union, and around the world, or to get work experience at businesses in the European Union, managed by the International Relations Service.
- Volunteer work experience and projects with university development cooperation programmes in least developed countries, run through the development cooperation programmes managed by the Cooperation for Development and Solidarity Office (OCDS).
High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish Degrees receive positive evaluations by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). This process is called verification, and it serves to ensure that the development programme in which you will participate will provide the skills and learning results that it is supposed to.
