The main aim of the degree programme is to train professionals with a global scientific knowledge of all areas within English Studies and with an ability to continue training to adapt to constantly changing sociocultural and professional settings. The skills and abilities worked on throughout the degree intend to train domestic and international competent students in issues relating to the description and analysis of English language and linguistics, and the main literary and cultural production from the United Kingdom, the United States and other English-speaking countries with increasing importance.

In short, the Degree in English Studies intends to provide core consolidated training to students for them to perform their professional duties in different areas, including education and research, linguistic consulting for businesses and institutions, translation, cultural management and the media. In turn, the programme aims to enable students to go on to further postgraduate training.

Specific Skills

  1. The ability to fluently communicate in English, both orally and in writing, with the suitable level and complexity for any context or situation.
  2. Knowledge of different levels of analysis and usages of the English linguistic system to understand the links between form and meaning, on the one hand, and meaning and context, on the other.
  3. Knowledge and comprehension of the main cultural and literary tracts that define the English-speaking world.
  4. The ability to analyse English texts from a linguistic, literary and cultural standpoint.
  5. Knowledge and comprehension of the main contributions made from discipline related to English Studies (linguistics, applied linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies).
  6. Knowledge of teaching practice for English language, culture and literature.
  7. The ability to translate different types of text.
  8. The ability to interpret and produce academic documents or technical reports in the discipline.
  9. The ability to carry out linguistic and stylistic advice and proofing tasks.
  10. The ability to located and use information related to the discipline in databases and internet resources, as well as use specific computer applications in the field of study.
  11. Knowledge of a second foreign language, its culture and literature.
