The main objective of the degree in Philosophy is to study and investigate the most fundamental issues regarding philosophical thought, from its origins to the contemporary world, in the different contexts of reality, experience, and values: knowledge, language, metaphysics, morality, political and social thought, science and technology, logic, aesthetics, anthropology, and culture.
What skills will you acquire?
With solid interdisciplinary humanistic training and the development of analytic rigor, critical judgement, and the ability to question, conceptualise, and argue, the degree in Philosophy will prepare graduates with the ability to: a) carry out tasks in a wide range of professions, b) continue their education with a high level of autonomy, c) specialise in Master's or doctorate programmes, d) versatilely adapt themselves to the specific needs of sociocultural realities, and d) thoughtfully participate in the dissemination of knowledge and the assuming of professional, civil, and social responsibilities.
What profile should you have?
Given its diversity and inter-disciplinary nature, the programme in Philosophy welcomes students with a wide variety of skills, knowledge and interests. Nonetheless, some specific characteristics are ideal academic and individual predispositions, either at the start or likely to be developed during the degree programme:
- An ability and interest in analysis, reasoning and critical reflection
- The skill for synthesis and logical analysis
- Developing independent learning (a love for reflexive reading)
- An interest and ability for relationships, dialogue, mediation, teamwork and communication
- An ability for criticism and reasoning, with a favourable attitude when considering and prudently assessing opposing arguments
- Practising values associated with how a democratic society works: responsibility, tolerance, equality, solidarity, a respect for plurality and the logical defence of human rights.
Of course, it is always appropriate to possess core knowledge of some philosophical theories and techniques, as well as current issues that connect directly to philosophical debate.
What career opportunities will you have?
The Degree in Philosophy trains students for many more professional careers than is generally perceived. Providing a multi-purpose and in-depth training where knowledge is developed as well as fundamental discursive, analytical, critical, evaluative and comprehensive skills and abilities gives students the ideal springboard for:
- Teaching: at university, secondary schools and in further education
- Research in specific and, ever more inter-disciplinary groups
- Applied ethics: advice for public administration and private boards (medicine, research, politics)
- Cultural and information management: control and analysis of the effectiveness of information systems
- Human resources management and work organisation
Travel and Learn
The UIB offers students the chance to take part in different exchange and mobility programmes:
- Exchange and mobility programmes: to complete part of your studies at another university in Spain, the European Union, and around the world, or to get work experience at businesses in the European Union, managed by the International Relations Service.
- Volunteer work experience and projects with university development cooperation programmes in least developed countries, run through the development cooperation programmes managed by the Cooperation for Development and Solidarity Office (OCDS).
High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish Degrees receive positive evaluations by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). This process is called verification, and it serves to ensure that the development programme in which you will participate will provide the skills and learning results that it is supposed to.

The European Higher Education Area requires that a system be in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes .
