The PhD thesis is the start to learning as a researcher. As such, students need to know how to undertake exhaustive bibliographical research on a topic, formulate the research that is lacking, develop it in the laboratory, know how to rigorously interpret the data and, finally, draw conclusions from all this. All this work must be reflected in publications in international journals with the widest reach possible. Research is supervised by the thesis supervisor who corrects errors in interpretation, provides new ideas and discusses all experimental results.
Moreover, 150 hours of cross-cutting and specific training activities must be undertaken. At least 60 hours must be taken from the cross-cutting subjects offered by the EDUIB. In terms of specific activities, students must attend courses (seminars, tutorials, summer schools, etc.) or conferences useful for training (min. 45 hours) or conferences given by experts in the field (min. 10 conferences). Students also have the chance to undertake overseas stays (min. 480 hours where they wish to be awarded an International Mention), as well as publish articles in high-impact journals (each article is counted as ten hours of work, up to a maximum of 30 hours). At least 150 hours for the training period must be taken in accordance with the stated minimum hours. These supplementary courses are normally taken in the first two years of the PhD and are supervised by the tutor and the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme (CAD).
What skills will you acquire?
n essence, to think like a scientist. Rigorous research is closely linked to the training acquired whilst the thesis is in development. Independent criteria are another objective to attain.
Basically, researchers generate knowledge with their own resources and expand on what they saw during their undergraduate and master's programmes. When doctorands finish their thesis, they are researchers who can work independently.
What career opportunities will you have?
You may apply for both national and international post-doctoral grants or contracts, and jobs at innovative firms that require PhD holders. You may also take your first steps in your scientific career by joining the teaching body at universities; normally, doctorands start off as assistant lecturers with ongoing career reviews and progression. Some UIB graduates are currently part of research teams overseas, work at top-flight pharmaceutical firms, NATO research centres and the WHO.
After the post-doctoral period, there are grants such as Ramón y Cajal or Torres Quevedo that enable graduates to take up posts at Spanish universities, provided they demonstrate research excellence. These grants help progression to the categories of contract lecturer with a doctoral degree and senior university lecturer.

High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes.
The doctorate programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the results section.
