Master's Degree in Occupational Risk Prevention
Academic year 2024-25
In order to be awarded the master's degree, students shall pass 60 credits as follows:
- 18 credits from mandatory subjects on cross-cutting content regarding occupational risk prevention
- 28 elective credits including at least one of the three specialisations offered on the programme: Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology
- 8 credits from External Academic Placements
- 6 credits from the Master’s Thesis comprising original research on occupational risk prevention.
Students must take at least one of the three specialisations offered on the programme from the elective credits:
- Occupational Safety (28 credits). This includes the specific Safety at Work subject and two general subjects related to the other two areas of specialisation on the programme: 12028, 12034, 12033
- Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology (28 credits). This includes the specific Applied Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology subjects, and two general subjects related to the other two areas of specialisation on the programme: 12029, 12030, 12032, 12034
- Industrial Hygiene (28 credits). This includes the specific Industrial Hygiene subject and two general subjects related to the other two areas of specialisation on the programme: 12031, 12032, 12033.
Teaching Organisation
The programme runs live online classes and tutorials over the Teams platform (from 5 pm). Class sessions are recorded for later viewing. Moreover, students are provided with material for each subject, as well as different study aids and practice sessions.
Specific Curricular Structures
Although the learning outcomes from the programme come from taking a single specialisation, students wishing to delve deeper into the other specialisations may do so by taking different combinations:
Two Specialisations
Students will be awarded a degree with two specialisations, taking a total of 70 credits in the same academic year. This option means taking extra 10 credits from the general curriculum. Therefore, this option is suitable for students who have greater availability and who are mainly focused on the study programme.
Where students wish to take specialisation 1 in Occupational Safety and specialisation 2 in Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology, as well as specific subjects on both specialisations, they should only take the general subject on specialisation 3 in Industrial Hygiene Principles and Techniques: 12028, 12029, 12030 and 12034.
Where students wish to take specialisation 1 in Occupational Safety and specialisation 3 in Industrial Hygiene, as well as specific subjects on both specialisations, they should only take the general subject on specialisation 2 in Ergonomics and Psychosociology Principles and Techniques: 12028, 12031 and 12033.
Where students wish to take specialisation 2 in Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology and specialisation 3 in Industrial Hygiene, as well as specific subjects on both specialisations, they should only take the general subject on specialisation 1 in Safety at Work Principles and Techniques: 12029, 12030, 12031 and 12032.
Three Specialisations
Where students wish to be awarded the three specialisations, they should only take the specific subjects for each: 12028, 12029, 12030 and 12031.
In this instance, students will be awarded the degree with three specialisations, worth a total of 80 credits. It is not possible to take all specialisations in the same academic year, either from an academic or a scheduling perspective. Therefore, and in accordance with the planned schedule, students wishing to take all three specialisations are recommended to do so as follows: Occupational Safety, and Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology in the first year, and Industrial Hygiene in the second year.
