The programme is designed to train expert researchers in the field of human nutrition and its related diseases, from nutritional epidemiology to molecular changes linked to the action of nutrients through deficiency or excess, with a clear application in clinical practice and public health.
This PhD programme will boost this type of research in basic nutrition, clinical practice and public health through the University Institute for Research into Health Sciences (IUNICS) at the UIB, the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IDISBA) and CIBEROBN (Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition) at the Carlos III Health Institute.
What skills will you acquire?
The latest advanced techniques will be acquired so as to carry out research in the field of basic and applied nutrition for clinical practice and public health.
Theses will be devised within the framework of research institutes housing scientists and clinics, having contact with enriching environments for training, whether from basic or clinical nutrition.
Undertaking research work in these settings opens up new professional perspectives and will create a hugely important culture of innovation and research for future professional opportunities, with new approaches and avoiding tasks that become routine and lead to a loss of interest in work.
What career opportunities will you have?
Graduates may continue research activities at universities and hospitals, as well as apply for grants for more intense research, request funding to coordinate or take part in research projects, and supervise PhD theses by other core or clinical professionals who are initiating their own research. Intensification grants and calls for projects offered by the Carlos III Health Institute can be found at the following links:
- National knowledge generation sub-programme for calls for projects
- National recruitment sub-programme for intensification contracts and programmes.
The fact that many researchers on this PhD programme are part of CIBER at the Carlos III Health Institute will support this training and information.
They may also continue a research career, initially by following a post-doctoral training programme that should finally lead to a permanent position as a researcher at an institute or university. Grants are published in the OSR (UIB) and IDISBA calls, as well as the organising institutions:

High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes.
The doctorate programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the results section.
