Specific Activities

Research Seminars
Objective
A specific training activity offered by the PhD programme comprising attendance at seminars given by researchers linked to the programme or by other renowned researchers (preferably from overseas research centres). The activity intends for students to acquire an up-to-date view of the main research areas in global public health, health services and health care, as well as to benefit from synergies and collaborative work between doctorands and teams on the programme. Each team on the PhD programme shall, alongside the academic committee, propose seminars on the different research areas. There will be two types of seminars: those dealing with methodological and procedure aspects, and those dealing with different research areas. The seminars shall be given in Spanish, Catalan or English, depending on the speakers' preference. Each seminar will last for two hours. Students shall attend at least five seminars throughout their training period, making for a minimum of ten hours. The thesis tutor and supervisor for each doctorand shall offer advice on which are the most suitable seminars for students' training
Hours
10
Requirements
-
Method
Mandatory
Schedule
Full-time students shall attend seminars from the first year of their programme. Part-time students may either choose to start attending in the first or second year of their programme, in line with their availability
Year
-
Assessment Procedure
Students shall submit an attendance certificate signed by the organiser for each of the seminars they attend throughout their training period, stating the title, date and duration. In addition, students shall submit a report on each of the seminars containing a critical summary of what was explained and its possible impact on their research work to their thesis supervisor. Supervisors shall assess these reports (Pass/Fail) and include them in the Doctorand Activities Document. In general, the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall undertake an annual assessment of the doctorand activities document to monitor student progress. In turn, and before the viva defence is authorised, the committee shall assess and ensure that the activities set as necessary on the programme with the minimum number of hours required for each have been fully completed
Mobility
The Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of the Balearic Islands, the IUNICS and the IdISBa run specific programmes to fund travel and stays for renowned researchers who work in the research areas of the programme. In addition, funding shall be requested from the guest lecturer programmes run by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, and the Autonomous Region of the Balearic Islands.

Presentation of Doctorands' Work
Objective
A specific training activity for students registered on the PhD programme aimed at scientific debate, contrasting ideas and presenting scientific work. Doctorands shall receive guidance and support to summarise the conclusions of their work, select and highlight the underlying arguments, and present different methodological options, as well as the limitations thereof. The activity shall conclude with the public presentation and defence of the work undertaken every year to the other students and lecturers on the PhD programme at a conference day for registered students on the programme. The number of hours for the activity includes the presentation preparation time and attendance at other presentations. The presentation time shall be 30 minutes per student. The presentation languages shall be Spanish, Catalan and English

Mobility
Objective
Ideally, both activity one (cross-cutting training courses) and four (preparing and presenting scientific papers) enable student mobility. In addition, experiments during the PhD thesis can also offer mobility. One example would be undertaking experiments at overseas centres within the framework of research projects which cannot be done at the research group facilities at the University of the Balearic Islands.

In this sense, there are three types of training activities that students should ideally undertake:
  • Attending specialised courses
  • Attending scientific conferences
  • Research stays

The Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall promote cross-cutting training activities (attending specialised courses and/or scientific conferences) at other universities/institutions in the framework of mobility activities, releasing periodic announcements when it is made aware of them.

The need for undertaking research stays at other laboratories is subject to the criteria set by the thesis supervisor.

One critical aspect of these activities is funding. In this sense, the University of the Balearic Islands offers specific programmes for funding travel, stays and registration at conferences for doctorands, where their work is accepted. Additionally, research groups have funds linked to projects that can be used for this purpose. Moreover, most national and international PhD grants include the possibility of student mobility to undertake research tasks at other centres. Nonetheless, the PhD programme cannot ensure funding for activities, the availability of mobility for part-time students or the need/possibility to do a specific training activity for each PhD student. Furthermore, the PhD skills may be attained without undertaking mobility activities.

For these reasons, mobility shall not be mandatory for PhD students, although it shall be deemed highly recommended for both full- and part-time students
