PhD in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling

Academic year 2024-25

Interdisciplinary and specific educational activities

The cross-cutting activities offered by the UIB Doctoral School can be found in the "PhD Training Activities" section.

The training activities specific to the PhD programme in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling are listed below.

Training activities on the interuniversity PhD programme

Specialised courses
Objective
Students will have the chance to attend specialised training courses that will enable them to delve into the specific techniques and methods that they will need to apply to successfully complete their PhD thesis. These courses are generally organised by research groups and centres not linked to the PhD programme (for example, courses organised by the European Centre for Atomic and Molecular Calculus - CECAM). They last between 3 and 5 days and are commonly taught in English).
These courses are expected to contribute to the acquisition of competencies CB11, CB14, CB15, CB16, CA05 and CA06 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
Spanish, English or Catalan
The annual doctoral meeting (international workshop) organised by the doctoral programme
Objective
Each year a scientific meeting lasting between two and three days shall be organised with the aim of bringing together students, supervisors and tutors. This meeting is fundamental to ensure cohesion within this inter-university programme, as it will be the main meeting point for students with fellow students and lecturers from the other participating universities. The doctorands will give oral presentations on the results achieved so far in their research activity. These presentations will allow an assessment of the activities that have been carried out so far. The meetings will be attended by students from European universities with which we have collaboration agreements and will be regarded as international workshops. At least half a day in these workshops will be devoted to courses where cross-cutting competencies and skills transferable to the industry shall be developed (project organisation, quality management, opportunities for entrepreneurs...) with a view to fostering the integration of our students in the industry. The meetings will include the collaboration of companies that support the PhD.
Through this activity students are expected to demonstrate the acquisition of competencies CB11, CB14, CB15, CB16, CA05 and CA06 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
English
Research seminars
Objective
This activity consists in attending seminars given by research staff linked to the PhD programme or renowned guest research staff (preferably from overseas research centres).
Through this activity students are expected to demonstrate the acquisition of competencies CB11, CB15 and CA05 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
Spanish, English or Catalan
Preparation of papers for publication in scientific journals
Objective
Doctorands shall get actively involved in the writing of papers reflecting the results of their research for publication in scientific journals. It is considered that a basic part of their training entails acquiring skills such as writing in English, conducting a literature review effectively, searching for pre-existing scientific information, and having the ability to synthesise when presenting the results. Students will also need to become familiar with the publication process, including the contact with editors and reviewers, and handling proofreading tasks.
Through this activity students are expected to demonstrate the acquisition of competencies CB13, CB14, CB15, CA02 and CA06 on the current study programme.
Modality
Non-face-to-face
Language
English
Research stays at overseas centres
Objective
The main purpose of these stays is to carry out part of the doctorand’s research, and they are considered a fundamental part of the training, as they will enable students to get to know other education and research systems, access seminars and courses held at other universities, improve their knowledge of a second language, and create their own network of scientific contacts. In addition, the completion of this stay is a requirement to obtain the international mention. The tutors and supervisors will encourage students on the programme to pursue this distinction.
Through this activity students are expected to demonstrate the acquisition of competencies CB12, CA03, CA04 and CA05 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
English
Interdisciplinary training
Objective
Cross-disciplinary training can be attained in two ways: a) By attending the annual doctoral meeting, where at least half a day will be devoted to courses where cross-cutting competencies and skills transferable to the industry shall be developed, and b) By attending locally developed and delivered courses. It is strongly recommended that the contents of these courses cover aspects such as, project organisation, quality management, employability, know-how transfer, communication of science, opportunities for entrepreneurs, writing of scientific papers, assessment of the research activity, calls for research grants, etc.
Cross-cutting training will serve to develop competencies CB14, CB15 and CB16 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
Spanish, English or Catalan
Preparation and presentation of two formal seminars
Objective
The PhD student must prepare and present two formal seminars. The first shall take place during the first 18 months and will contain the formulation of the research work plan and the first results. It may be given either in Spanish or in English. The second will contain the doctorand’s results and conclusions, and must serve as preparation for the thesis viva defence, and thus be conducted prior to it and be given in the same language to be used at the viva. Both seminars may take place locally or be integrated in the annual doctoral meeting (international workshop of the doctoral programme).
Through this activity students are expected to demonstrate the acquisition of competencies CB15 and CA06 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
Spanish or English
Presentation of papers at national or international scientific conferences
Objective
Participation in at least two scientific conferences throughout the period during which the PhD thesis is in preparation is highly encouraged. Highly prestigious international conferences in the doctorand’s research area should be given priority. At national or international conferences in the field of Computational Chemistry, student participation involves the presentation of a scientific contribution, paper or poster in English.
Skills
This activity will serve to develop competencies CB11, CB14, CB15, CB16, CA05 and CA06 on the current study programme.
Modality
Face-to-face
Language
Spanish or English
