Acces and entry Requirements

The recommended entry profile for the PhD in History, History of Art and Geography programme is graduates in history, history of art, geography, fine art, geology and environmental science. Holders of five-year undergraduate degrees shall be admitted to the PhD programme without having to take a master’s degree. For those with four-year degrees, they will need to have an official undergraduate degree and a master’s degree, having passed 300 ECTS credits across both programmes. These master’s programmes from the aforementioned areas may have been taken at the UIB or other universities. In this regard, and notwithstanding doctorands having taken equivalent studies, the UIB offers the following:

  • Master’s Degree in Cultural Heritage: Research and Management.

For students who fulfil the recommended entry profile, the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall select applicants for the PhD in accordance with the following weighted criteria:

  • The academic record from prior undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications (80%). The mark for each subject shall be weighted based on the number of credits for each subject, regardless of whether they are undergraduate (four- or five-year programmes, or engineering) or postgraduate subjects. A scoring scale of subjects from 0 to 10 will be used, since it is a scoring system that is extended to most countries and easily scalable to other systems.
  • Assessment of a statement of reasons motivating PhD candidates to enrol on this programme (10%). The level of motivation, clarity of expression and link to the research areas on the programme shall be assessed.
  • Other merits: (10%). Academic and scientific merits beyond the scope of the academic record/transcript shall be assessed, such as specialised courses, a background in collaborating with research groups, publications, conference attendance and professional experience.

The Academic Committee shall carry out the admission process.

With regard to students who have specific educational requirements arising from any disability, the Support for People with Special Needs Office at the UIB (https://oficinasuport.uib.cat/) shall assess their needs and make any possible curricular adaptation proposals to the Academic Committee for the PhD programme.

Support and guidance information

Protocol for the Development and Assessment of Doctorand Research Plans

The doctorand research plan must include the following information on the proposed PhD thesis:

  • Background
  • Objectives
  • Research sources and methodology
  • Research stages and time planning
  • Reference bibliography.

The Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall assign a tutor to admitted candidates. Tutors must hold a PhD, have accredited experience in research and take part in the PhD programme. Within six months from initial enrolment, the Academic Committee for the PhD programme will assign a thesis supervisor to each student. Supervisors may or may not also be tutors.

Supervision and monitoring of doctorand training activities and their PhD theses shall be in line with the UIB procedures for PhDs (RD 99/2011), the UIB Doctoral Degree Regulations (https://seu.uib.cat/fou/acord/13084/) and the verified degree report that you may consult on the "Results" webpage. In addition to fostering multidisciplinary research, this programme aims to strengthen joint supervision for national and international theses. In order to achieve this goal, several resources shall be used, including the ERASMUS programmes for PhD students.

The academic committee or one of its members shall notify students about the tutorial plan at the start of every academic year.
