Interdisciplinary and specific educational activities

All cross-cutting activities are mandatory. Doctorands must take a minimum of 60 hours.

Cross-cutting training programme for PhD students at the University of the Balearic Islands

The cross-cutting training activities proposed will have specific assessment procedures based on objective tests. As a general rule, the supervisor or tutor shall be responsible for incoporating the assessment or successful completion into the PhD activities document.

Specific Activities

Research Seminars
Objective
A specific training activity offered by the PhD programme or renowned researchers (preferably, from overseas research centres) that is mandatory for students on the programme. It comprises attending seminars taught by researchers linked to the PhD programme. Guest researchers will also take part within the framework of established agreements. It is scheduled as a mandatory or elective activity, where applicable, for students from other universities who are taking part in established mobility programmes.

Language of instruction
Training activities are generally taught in Spanish and/or Catalan. The use of other languages, particularly English, is reserved for overseas lecturers who take part in activities as part of international exchanges.
Schedule
Credits for this activity are spread over three years at a rate of 10 hours per year. Therefore, they must be done in the first three years. For part-time students, the timeframe is extended to five years and, in this sense, students may select the year when they do them.
Assessment Procedure
Seminars must be accredited in advance by the Academic Committee for the PhD programme as specific training activities for the specific programme. Students shall propose the specific activity to undertake over the digital application. Tutors/supervisors may propose activities, accept those proposed by students or not, and validate them. After the activities, students shall accredit their participation in the activity with supporting documents that will be added to the activities document. The Academic Committee for the PhD programme shall generally assess the activities document in the annual assessment.

Seminars given by PhD students
Objective
This activity comprises preparing and presenting work undertaken by PhD students to other students and thesis supervisors. The activity will take place under the supervision and guidance of thesis supervisors.
Hours
10 hours.
The number of hours covers preparing, presenting and attending other seminar presentations.

Language of instruction
This training activity is undertaken in Catalan and/or Spanish. The use of other languages, specifically English, is reserved for students on the joint supervision programme.
Schedule
All students must participate in at least one session throughout their training on the programme.

Preparing Scientific Papers and/or Publications
Objective
The aim is to acquire training and experience in scientific communication and publication. Most of the activity comprises preparing and submitting a paper related to the research field of the thesis. It also includes public presentation at national or international conferences, congresses, meetings or PhD workshops. With regard to scientific publications, the training activity involves producing a research article and responding to the review process undertaken by the journal’s editorial board.

Where students wish to be awarded an International Mention, the number of hours must be at least 480 since mentions require a minimum three-month stay.

The working language will depend on where the activity takes place.
Schedule
Both full-time and part-time students may undertake this activity at any time during their enrolment on the PhD programme.
Assessment Procedure
The academic committee must authorise the activity. Students shall submit supporting documents in the annual assessment that demonstrate their attendance at the conference or specialisation course, and/or a report on their stay certified by the host researcher (accreditation letter) and the thesis supervisor, and endorsed by the academic committee. The report shall include all relevant details about the stay (dates, host group, activities undertaken) and be added to the doctorand activities document.
