Interdisciplinary and specific educational activities

Students on the PhD in Philology and Philosophy are recommended to take at least 30 hours from cross-cutting training activities and at least 60 hours from specific activities. This also applies to part-time students. The training activities are listed below:

Cross-cutting Activities

Communication Skills in English: Written and Oral Expression (module I) (elective)
Objective
A cross-cutting training activity aimed at attaining advanced knowledge of English (written and oral communicaiton)

Actual attendance of students. Student assessment shall be performed by the lecturer for the training activity. Activities where students can practise their writing abilities in English to attain C1-level skills. Students shall sit an assessed activity test

Objective
A cross-cutting training activity aimed at students attaining advanced knowledge of English (written and oral communication). Students shall work on their English usage based on immersion in the communication context for the speciality, linked to inherent situations and documents for each area. The specific content of this module shall be oral fluency (seminars, presentations and workshops)

Bibliographic Search Techniques - (elective)

A cross-cutting training activity aimed at acquiring the ability to undertake and manage bibliography searches on a research topic in different public and private databases

Assessment procedure
Actual attendance of students. Student assessment shall be performed by the lecturer for the training activity. Students shall undertake a review of the state-of-the-art in their research topic by analysing the main studies found in a bibliography search under the supervision of their thesis supervisor. This shall be incorporated as a completed task into the doctorand activities document
Ethics and Integrity in Scientific Research - (elective)
Objective
A cross-cutting activity aimed at students understanding the purpose and objectives of scientific research in any area. The scientific method. Classification of scientific disciplines. Ethical problems in scientific research

Specific Activities

Research Seminars - (elective)

Attending seminars given by research staff linked to the PhD programme, aimed at acquiring knowledge of research techniques
