Cross-cutting Activities

Communication Skills in English: Written and Oral Expression (Module I)
Objective
A cross-cutting training activity aimed at attaining advanced knowledge of English (written and oral communication)

Assessment procedure
Attendance at each session shall be registered, and students shall be required to reach at least 80% global attendance and undertake all the learning activities proposed in order for the activity to be considered as completed. This activity shall be incorporated into the doctorand activities document as completed based on the attendance record and the teaching staff's positive assessment.
In general, the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall undertake an annual assessment of the doctorand activities document to monitor student progress. In turn, and before the viva defence is authorised, the committee shall assess and ensure that the activites set as necessary on the programme with the minimum number of hours required for each have been fully completed.

Finding, Using and Communicating Scientific Information
Objective
A cross-cutting training activity aimed at acquiring the ability to undertake and manage bibliography searches on a research topic in different public and private datavases

Assessment procedure
Attendance at each session shall be registered, and students shall be required to reach at least 80% global attendance and undertake all the learning activities proposed in order for the activity to be considered as completed. This activity shall be incorporated into the doctorand activities document as completed based on the attendance record and the teaching staff's positive assessment. More specifically, students will carry out a preliminary bibliographic search on their PhD thesis topic and export all relevant documents into a reference management software so as to organise and generate the bibliography automatically. This activity shall be incorporated into the doctorand activities document as completed based on the attendance record and the positive assessment received, which shall be jointly undertaken by the lecturer for the training activity and the thesis supervisor.

Specific Activities

Research Seminars
Objective
This activity is aimed at students acquiring an up-to-date view of the main lines of research in the field of Psychology and taking advantage of the synergies and collaborative work between the doctorands themselves and the research groups on the programme

Schedule
Each of the three research groups in the programme shall organise at least one two-hour seminar per academic year (thus, up to three seminars per year shall be held). Each student must attend a minimum of five seminars throughout his/her time on the programme. Therefore, this is a 10-hour activity

This activity may be undertaken spread across the three years of the PhD programme (full-time students) or across five (part-time students)
Assessment procedure
The thesis supervisor shall be responsible for assessing student attendance, successful completion of the activity, and acquisition of the competencies taught in it. To this end, the doctorand must write a summary of each seminar in which s/he has participated
Preparing and Presenting Scientific Papers
Objective
This activity is oriented towards scientific debate, the contrast of ideas and the necessary training for presenting scientific work. Description of the activity: Doctorands shall receive guidance and support to synthesise the conclusions of their work, select and highlight the arguments that support them, and present the different methodological options, as well as their limitations

Schedule
Full-time students shall attend seminars on an annual basis from the second year of their programme (2nd and 3rd year). Part-time students shall participate in this activity at least twice from the second year of the programme (for instance, on the 3rd and 5th year)
Assessment procedure
Attendance at and presentation of each seminar shall be registered. The activity shall be incorporated into the doctorand activities document based on the attendance record and the positive assessment of each of the two presentations by the thesis supervisor
