Brief CV

Dr. Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies obtained a BA in English Studies at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2008. In 2010 she completed an MA in English Studies at the same university. Yolanda Joy defended her PhD in January 2016 on the importance given to pronunciation in EFL classes in Spain. From 2011 to 2014 she had a three-year pre-doctoral grant awarded by the Xunta de Galicia. Her main interests include the teaching of EFL, teaching speaking and English pronunciation, English for Tourism, ESP, the use of ICTs applied to the teaching of English, new varieties of English (EIL, ELF) and innovative techniques for teaching languages (songs, games, role-plays, etc). She is currently working as a Tenure-track contract Lecturer with a PhD (Contratada Doctora Interina) within the Departamento de Filología Española, Moderna y Clásicas. She teaches ESP at the Faculty of Tourism. She is an assistant editor in the journals RAEL and ATLANTIS. She carried out research stays at the University of Reading between February and May 2013 and the University of Jaume I (February-March 2020). She has been part of the organising committee of several conferences (ICSE, INCICE y ELC4) and actively collaborated in the organization of ICELTL1, XXXIX SEL International Conference, ICAME34 and GALA13. She was one of the plenary speakers in the 2nd UPCEL Conference. She has presented in over 30 national and international conferences and she has over 15 articles / book chapters published. She is currently the coordinator of the subjects English 1 and English 3 at the Faculty of Tourism as well as the coordinator for all the BA dissertations carried out by students from the GTUR or GATU degrees but supervised by a member of the Department of Spanish, Modern and Classical Philology. Moreover, she is one of the mobility coordinators (Erasmus+ programme for incoming students, for student´s practical internships and for the teaching and administration staff). She is also a member of the Faculty Board (Tourism).
