Brief CV
Pharmacy degree and master in neurosciences from the University of Seville (US). Subsequently, he obtained a PhD scholarship at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the US, where he earned his PhD in 2011 with Cum Laude and a "European Mention", under supervision of Dr. Javier Vitorica and Dr. Marisa Vizuete. During the PhD stage, Dr. Torres obtained competitive public funds to enjoy stays at the R&D department of the pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis (Paris, France) and at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven, Belgium). During this period, his research focused on the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Once he got his PhD, he started approaching the industrial sector and focused his research on the therapy of this disease. In 2013, he obtained a postdoctoral fellowship (“Subprograma Torres-Quevedo, Plan National de I+D”) to investigate a novel therapeutic approach known as “Melitherapy” for AD. This research was sustained in part with competitive funding from national and regional programs. In 2016 and 2017, Dr. Torres obtained regional grants (FPI grants associated with research projects) for 2 PhD students and for a coordinated company-university project, of which he was principal investigator and coordinator, to continue this research in the company.
In 2019, Dr. Torres accessed to a full-time position at the UIB. In 2019, he also obtained funding as principal investigator (PI) from the “Programa Nacional de I+D Retos de Colaboración (RTC)” and, in 2021, he obtained funding from the “Plan de Generación de Conocimiento y Retos de Investigación (Programa Nacional de I+D)” for young PIs for the first time. Subsequently, he also obtained competitive funds as PI from the national and regional R&D plans to continue researching lipid therapy for neurological diseases.
He has published more than 25 articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and books and has participated in more than 20 R&D projects/grants/contracts and 5 patents (licensed for exploitation). After more than 10 years researching neurodegenerative diseases, Dr. Torres has also started researching other neurological diseases such as brain cancer and neuropathic pain. He is aware of the importance of transferring the academic research results to the biotech/pharmaceutical industry to favor the development of new therapies. In this sense, after obtaining his full-time position at the UIB, Dr. Torres maintains an R&D contract with the company Laminar Pharmaceuticals S.A.
Regarding academic experience, Dr. Torres has participated in 3 PhD theses, as well as in more than 10 undergraduate and master's degree final projects (TFG and TFM) and tutorized students in external internships. On the other hand, his teaching dedication has been at undergraduate level in theory and practical lessons, both at the US and the UIB. At postgraduate level, he has also taught during the last years, mainly at the theoretical level in the master of applied biotechnology (Master Oficial de Biotecnología Aplicada, MBTA) at the UIB.
