Brief CV

Miquel MIR-GUAL is a specialist in geomorphology and coastal management. Degree in Geography (2007) and PhD, with European mention (2014) by the University of the Balearic Islands, he has focused his scientific and research career on coastal geomorphology, especially on the knowledge and evolution of beach-dune systems. His doctoral thesis studied the erosive morphologies of the beach-dune systems on the coasts of Mallorca and Menorca, at the same time postulating management measures to prevent the erosion and retreat of sandy beaches.

His doctoral thesis was the first in Spain to work on and model wind and sedimentary dynamics in coastal sandy environments based on the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics). He worked on and acquired this technique during his pre-doctoral stay at Edge Hill University (Lancashire, UK) where he also wrote a large part of his thesis report. Previously, he carried out a pre-doctoral stay at the Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), in the Grupo de Geografía Física (Department of Geography).

He is currently a researcher at the Observatory of Natural Risks and Emergencies of the Balearic Islands (RiscBal), attached to the University of the Balearic Islands. His line of research focuses on the generation of knowledge regarding both coastal risks and the vulnerability, prevention, mitigation and management of the effects of coastal events on the environment and the population.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mir-Gual has published numerous articles in national and international journals of impact (e.g. Ocean and Coastal Management, Geo-Marine Letters, Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Journal of Coastal Research, among others), as well as book chapters in publishers prestigious, like Springer. In addition, he has been editor and co-editor of several books. He is a member of the Editorial Board and the Publications Board of the Bulletin of the Natural History Society of the Balearic Islands. He has been a member of the organizing committee and scientific committee of several conferences and congresses.

Apart from his research side, Dr. Mir-Gual has vast experience in public management. From 2016 to 2019 he was the General Director of Natural Areas and Biodiversity of the Government of the Balearic Islands, while from 2019 to 2023 he was the Minister of Environment and Territory. For this reason, it also has great experience and a degree of specialization in both the management and planning of natural spaces, the management of the water cycle, waste and the territory.
