Curriculum

Brief CV

Degree in Biology (2004) and Biochemistry (2005) from the University of the Balearic Islands and doctor from the same university in 2009. Professor hired interim doctor in the Department of Fundamental Biology and Health Sciences of the University of the Balearic Islands. Member of the Laboratory in Physical Activity Sciences and of the research group in Community Nutrition and Oxidative Stress, of the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa) and of the University Institute of Health Sciences Research (IUNICS). Current research lines: Biochemistry of nutrition and food; Oxidative stress and its regulation; Biochemistry of Physical Activity and its interaction with nutrition; cardiovascular calcification; development of drugs against cardiovascular calcification. He has been a Principal Investigator and has experience in the management of subsidized projects in public calls at autonomous level (AAEE7/2014, AAEE025/2017, PRI19/10), and is a Principal Investigator in a collaboration project of the University of the Balearic Islands with Sanifit Therapeutics to participate in the scientific development of a new experimental drug. He has also participated in more than 20 competitive research projects (financed at regional, national and European level) and is currently participating in a COST action funded by the European Commission. He has participated in more than 70 communications to national and international conferences, 10 of which have been oral communications in international conferences. He is the author of a total of 39 articles published in international scientific journals of impact.

He has experience in the study of the cellular mechanisms that trigger oxidative stress situations, as well as the molecular mechanisms that direct the antioxidant response of the cell and the organism. He has worked with in vitro models of cell cultures, animal models in vivo and in human trials. On the one hand, he has worked in trials of nutritional intervention, such as the PREDIMED study of prevention of metabolic syndrome with Mediterranean diet and physical activity, as well as numerous studies of nutritional intervention with functional foods enriched with different antioxidant nutrients. On the other hand, hehas been part of Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 regulatory clinical studies, from Phase 1 clinical trials of the 'First-time-in-humans' type to evaluate the safety and pharmacokinetics of a new drug in development (SNF472) to a multicenter and international Phase 2 trial with 200 patients (double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine the effect of compound SNF472 on the progression of cardiovascular calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis).

He is currently directing a doctoral thesis. He has tutored 14 master's thesis and 4 degree's thesis. He has participated in 4 teaching innovation projects, in two of which he has been Principal Investigator.

He is the author of three patents, one of them already granted in the United States and in the process of evaluation in Europe and other regions and countries.

He has been reviewer of 7 scientific articles for indexed journals and guest editor of a special issue in an indexed magazine located in the first quartile of its category.
