Brief CV

Álvaro Sabater Gárriz is a professor at the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy at the University of the Balearic Islands. He earned his PhD in Neurosciences with international distinction in 2024, focusing on the identification of pain biomarkers in cerebral palsy. In these studies, techniques such as EEG, EKG, EMG, and sensory thresholds were used. Additionally, various salivary and urinary metabolites, biorhythms, and the use of artificial intelligence in identifying patterns of facial expressions of pain were evaluated. Currently, he is a member of the Neurodynamics and Clinical Psychology Research Group (IUNICS-IdISBa), where he continues his research in the area of somatosensory processing in neurodevelopmental disorders, with a special focus on pain. He has participated in three nationally funded competitive projects: FCT-20-16485, PID2020-114967GA-I00 and PID2023-152387NB-I00 (ongoing). He has published studies in JCR-indexed journals and presented communications at national and international conferences. He has completed predoctoral and postdoctoral stays at the University of Applied Sciences of Jyvaskyla (Finland), University of Chile (Chile), Kyoto University (Japan), and Jikei Medical University (Tokyo, Japan), where he continues to collaborate as a visiting researcher with the Pain Neurosciences Group in identifying brain areas of selective activation by pain in animal models (rodents). In these studies, he uses surgical, immunohistochemical, and functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques.As a result of the transfer of his research outcomes, he has been awarded 7 honors, among which stand out the "2022 Social Innovation Award" from the Council of Mallorca, the 2024 National Research and Innovation Award from the AMPANS Foundation, and the 2024 Innovation Award from the Circle of Economy of Mallorca.
