Brief CV
Dr. Margarita Gomila is a full professor in the area of Microbiology at the Department of Biology of the UIB. She obtained her degree in Biology in 1999 and in Biochemistry in 2000 from the same university. In 2007, she earned her PhD in Biology, obtaining the International Doctorate mention and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award for her biennium.
Currently, she carries out her research in the field of microbial molecular ecology, with a particular interest in microbial biodiversity. Her work focuses on taxonomy, phylogeny, and systematics, as well as genomics and microbial molecular ecology in various fields, both clinical and environmental.
Throughout her research career, she has undertaken predoctoral and postdoctoral stays at institutions in England, Germany, and Sweden. She has actively participated in more than 40 national and international research projects, serving as principal investigator in eight of them.
She is the author of more than 75 scientific publications, including two book chapters and five outreach articles. Additionally, she has presented her research at more than 80 national and international conferences and has received four awards in recognition of her scientific work, three of them at congresses and one at the local level. Her publications have been cited 2,441 times, with an h-index of 28 according to Scopus and 3,462 according to Google Scholar (h-index = 34, i10 index = 66).
In the field of teaching, she has extensive experience in university education at various academic levels. She has contributed to the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervising more than 30 master's final projects and supervising or co-supervising five doctoral theses. She is currently supervising three doctoral theses.
She has three recognized research productivity periods (sexenios), five teaching evaluation periods (quinquenios), and the regional complements for teaching, research, and research excellence from the autonomous community.
Regarding her administrative roles, she has been the secretary of the Faculty of Sciences since March 2020, the director of the Master’s in Advanced Microbiology since September 2023, and the secretary of the Doctoral Program in Environmental and Biomedical Microbiology, also since September 2023.
Since 2015, she has been a member of the board of directors of the Taxonomy, Phylogeny, and Biodiversity Group of the Spanish Society for Microbiology, serving as a board member until 2023 and as secretary from then until the present. She has also been a board member of the Spanish Society for Microbiology since 2024 and the Spanish Ambassador for ASM since 2025.
