PhD in Biology from the University of the Balearic Islands, University Professor of the Department of Geography (Physical Geography).
The lines of research that he is currently developing are related to the Management and Planning of Natural Areas, current and historical Biogeography (subjects he teaches in the geography degree), geomorphology and the taxonomy of different zoological groups, invertebrate paleontology and biospeleology. It is also linked to research groups that work on topics related to the history of science. He has published more than 300 research papers, including books, articles, book chapters, conference communications or as a scientific editor. Among the international scientific journals in which he has published include: Journal of Coastal Research, Journal of Biogeography, Ecography, Acta Oecologica, Z. fur Geomorphology, Fisheries Research, Geo-Marine Letters, Ocean & Coastal Management, Quaternary International, among others. .
For more than a decade he has directed a competitive research group recognized by the UIB and the autonomous community, which includes geologists, biologists, geographers and an archaeologist), BIOGEOMED, which attempts to elucidate the formation processes of the Balearic Islands and the external dynamics of the Mediterranean basin as well as its biogeography. He is currently within the research group GIST (Sustainability and Territory).
It has three recognized research sections. He has directed three doctoral theses and more than 40 Final Master's Projects at different universities.
He is currently Principal Investigator (together with Dr. M. Blàzquez) of the research project of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and State Research Agency financed with FEDER funds 'Overtourism in Spanish Coastal Destinations. Tourism Growth Strategies' (RTI2018-094844-B-C31); and IP of the project Evolution of the coastline of the beaches of Menorca (1956-2021) Institut Menorquí d'Estudis (IME).
He has acted as an evaluator for different scientific journals: Journal of Coastal Research, International Journal of Marine Science, Science of The Total Environment, Scripta Nova, Journal of Ecology, Ocean & Coastal Management, Orsis (Barcelona), Boletín de la AGE, Butlletí de the Catalan Institute of Natural History (Barcelona), Bulletin of the Societat d'Història Natural de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca), Endins (Palma de Mallorca), Bulletin of Applied Geography (Palma de Mallorca), Anuari Ornitològic de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca), Territoris (Palma de Mallorca), Butlletí de la Societat Català de Lepidopterologia (Barcelona), Butlletí dels Parcs i Espais Naturals de les Illes Balears (Palma de Mallorca).
He is currently a member of the editorial committee of scientific journals: as editor (since 1995--) of the Bolletí de la Societat d'Història Natural de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca), Endins (Palma de Mallorca) (since 1997--) , Anuari Ornitològic de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca) (since 1999--), Territoris (Departament de Ciències de la Terra UIB, Palma de Mallorca) (since 2002--). Editor of 'The Birds of the National Maritime-Terrestrial Park of the Cabrera Archipelago (Balearic Islands, Spain)' (MMA-GOB), of five editions of the 'Conference on the Environment of the Balearic Islands' held in Palma de Mallorca (2001 ), Palma de Mallorca and Maó -2003), Palma, Maó, Ibiza (2008, 2013 and 2018). Author or editor of 20 scientific books or monographs. President of the organizing committee of the National Congress of Coastal Geomorphology (2007).
It belongs to the Scientific Societies: Spanish Association of Geography (AGE), Societat d'Història Natural de les Balears (SHNB) (member of the board of directors) (Palma de Mallorca), Aragonese Entomological Society (SEA) (Saragossa), Museu Balear of Natural Sciences of Sóller (MBCNS), Spanish Society of Geomorphology (SEG), Catalan Society of Malacology (SCM).
He has obtained the Jaume I Prize from the Institute of Catalan Studies (1996) in the category of the best work or doctoral thesis for 'Endèmic fauna of the Balearic Islands' of the Catalan-speaking countries.
He is a member of the Governing Boards of the Sa Dragonera Natural Park (Mallorca) and the Mondragó Natural Park (appointed by the Conselleria de Medi Ambient as an expert member on conservation), a member of the Flora and Fauna Advisory Council (Govern de les Illes Balears), of the plenary session of the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics (Govern de les Illes Balears), head of the Natural Sciences section of the IME, President of the Board of Teaching and Research Staff of the UIB and president of the governing board of the Natural Park of es Trenc-Salobrar.
