Brief CV

Palma (Majorca), 1975. Civil Engineer, MsC and PhD in Construction Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (2003, Outstanding Doctorate Award). He taught at UPC from 2001 to 2003, when he joined UIB. Professor in Construction Engineering, specialised in structural engineering, teaches in the Degree in Building Engineering, Degree in Food and Agriculture Engineering and the Rural Environment and Master in Industrial Engineering. He co-founded the YouTube teaching channel 'Ingenia', specialized in structural engineering, which has accumulated more than 750,000 views. His research focuses on structural engineering. He has more than 60 published papers and collaborations in books or codes of practice, and more than 100 conference participations. His current research principally focuses on the study of the applications of shape memory alloys in structural engineering, in special for strengthening structural concrete members. He has collaborated in the Spanish Structural Concrete Code (2008) and with different companies and institutions from Spain, and from the Balearic Islands, in terms of technology transfer.

He has carried out research stays at the University of Toronto (Canada) and at EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology). He has also worked as a civil engineer specialized in water, sanitation and construction in Guinea-Conakry, Niger, Togo, India, Paraguay, El Salvador and in East Timor, always in the field of international development cooperation. At a scientific level, he is member of different specialized international networks, for example the working group WP 2.2.1 'Shear in beams' of the fib (Concrete International Federation) and the ACI/ASCE Committee 445 'Shear and torsion' (American Concrete Institute / American Society of Civil Engineers).

He has extensive experience in academic management, currently being the deputy director of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Construction and the coordinator of the Academic Committee of the PhD Program in Physics at the UIB. Previously, he held the position of Associate Vice-Rector for University Infrastructures (2008-2012), Deputy Director of the Physics Department (2007-2008) and Director of the Miquel Llabrés Feliu Foundation Chair (2007-2010). He has also managed associations and initiatives outside the university: he is currently the Vice-President of the Spanish Association of Structural Engineering (ACHE), an entity that represents a meeting point between engineers and architects from the structural engineering sector and the academic world, and he is founding member of Engineering Without Borders in the Balearic Islands, organization that he led between 2007 and 2012.

Summary of scientific production/quality indicators (March 2021):

  • Three recognized 'six-years research periods' (2001-2018, consecutive) and one six-years of technology transfer period (2004-2009).
  • h-index = 23 (Google Scholar) - h = 20 (Scopus).
  • 1929 citations (Google Scholar) - 1168 citations (Scopus).
  • 3 doctoral theses directed or co-directed already completed, plus 1 doctoral thesis in progress.
