Brief CV

Ivan Murray Mas, holds a PhD in geography from the UIB and an MsC in Environmental Sustainability from the University of Edinburgh. Since the academic year 2002-2003 he has been lecturing at the Department of Geography and has taught undergraduate courses in Geography, Tourism, Economics, Hotel Management and Primary Education. He has also taught in the master's degrees: Master's Degree in Tourism Management (UIB); Master's Degree on planning, management and sustainable tourism development (UNIA); University Master's Degree in Sustainable Management of Companies, Products and Tourist Destinations (UNIA); University Master's Degree in Analysis, Planning and Management in Coastal Areas (UIB); Master's Degree in Tourism Management and Planning (UIB); University Master's Degree in Tourism Economics: Monitoring and Evaluation (UIB).

Among the subjects taught we can point out the following: Geography of Tourism, Sustainable Tourism, Techniques of Cartographic Design and Automatic Cartography, Sustainability Indicators in Coastal Areas, Techniques of Spatial Analysis, Geographic Information Technologies for Tourism Management, Tourism Planning applied for Land-Use Management. He has directed several final degree essays and master thesis, as well as has participated in final degree, master's and thesis committees.

He is a member of the GIST (Research Group on Sustainability and Territory) of the UIB, directed by Dr. Onofre Rullan Salamanca (UIB) and of the GINTrans2 research group (Transdisciplinary Research Group on Socioecological Transitions) directed by Jorge Riechmann (UAM).

His research is framed from the perspective of critical geography, linking analysis from political economy, political ecology and ecological economics. His research focuses primarily on the spatial logics of tourism capitalism and the associated conflicts. He has participated in various research projects, cooperation projects and applied research projects. He is currently working in the research project 'Overtourism in Spanish Coastal Destinations. Among his publications, the following books can be underlined: Geographies of Balearic capitalism: power, socioeconomic metabolism and ecological footprint of a tourist superpower (2012); Capitalism and tourism in Spain. From the 'economic miracle' to the 'great crisis' (2015); Global tourism. Critical Perspectives in Tourism (2019), Tourism and Degrowth. Towards in Truly Sustainable Tourism (2020), #TourismPostCOVID19. Lockdown touristification (2021).
