Brief CV

My research work has been developed in the Population Genetics field (with special emphasis on isolated populations) and has been carried out basically in the Human Genetics group of the UIB (recognized as a Competitive Group by the Autonomous Community of the Islands Balearic Islands in successive external evaluations).

The lines within this field have been several, the main one has been on Human Population Genetics, on one hand we have studied Balearic population from a population-genetic point of view, both anthropologically and at the level of some genetic diseases (hereditary hemochromatosis, variegate porphyria, beta-thalassemia) and, on the other hand, Jewish populations from diverse origins, with especial attention to the Chueta population (descendants of Majorcan Crypto-Jews). This work has been developed in collaboration with various institutions, such as the University Hospital of Son Espases or the IPATIMUP Institute of the University of Porto (Portugal). In addition, the study of the Andean populations of the province of Salta and the Moroccan population has been addressed through collaboration with the National University of Salta (Argentina) and the Mohammed V-Agdal University (Morocco).

Moreover, the population dynamics of mitochondrial DNA in Drosophila subobscura was studied. This work was developed in collaboration with the group of Dr. Moya (Cavanillas Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, Valencia), as well as the study of the interaction between the hepatitis C virus and the host in co-infected patients of HCV and HIV, which also included members of the Son Llatzer Hospital (Mallorca) and the Higher Center for Public Health Research (Valencia).

Finally, in most recent years, we have worked on the multidisciplinary study of the evolution of the Podarcis genus in the Mediterranean, in collaboration with Dr. Pérez-Mellado (University of Salamanca) and Dr. Brown (John Moore University, Liverpool) and, in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, we have started a line of fisheries research using next generation sequencing methods.

I have combined my research activity with teaching work since 1988 and with university management: co-director of the Master in Biotechnology, Genetics and Cell Biology at the UIB (2009-2013), Head of Biology Studies (2012-2016), Vice Dean of the Faculty of Sciences (2012-2016) and Coordinator of mobility of Biology studies (since 2012.

The research developed has been funded in 46 competitive calls for national and regional projects and 1 European contract. As a result of the different lines of work described, I have published 75 articles in international indexed journals (35 in the last 10 years, 19 of them Q1). Approximately 70% of the published papers were on Human Population Genetics. The results have also been presented at genetics conferences and have been part of doctoral theses and research reports.
