Dr Miguel Bennasar Veny

Brief CV

Born in Felanitx in 1979, Dr. Miquel Bennasar-Veny is a Full Professor in the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), a department he led for eight years.

He holds a PhD in Biosocial Health Sciences (cum laude, 2012) and was awarded the Jean Dausset Prizefor the best doctoral thesis in Medicine or Related Sciences by the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands (RAMIB). He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology (specializing in the Anthropology of Health), a Master’s Degree in Human Cognition and Evolution, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, with a specialization in Family and Community Nursing. 


Teaching and Academic Management

Currently, Dr. Bennasar-Veny is the Director of the PhD Program in Global Health, Health Services, and Social Care at UIB. He teaches in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and the Master’s Degree in Research and Innovation in Health, covering subjects related to epidemiology, public health, and global health.

He has held various institutional roles, including: Head of the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy; Director of the Office for a Healthy and Sustainable University; Member of the UIB Social Council, and, Member of the UIB Hiring Committee.

He has a strong track record as an evaluator for university accreditation and quality assessment agencies, including: ANECA (National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain), ACSUG (Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System), AVAP (Valencian Agency for Assessment and Forecasting), Unibasq (Basque University System Quality Agency).


Research Activity

Dr. Bennasar-Veny is the leader of the Global Health research group at UIB and the Nursing, Community & Global Health group at the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa). He is also a member of the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP CB06/02/102), part of the Carlos III Health Institute.

His research focuses on the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the prevention of chronic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes. He currently leads the ALADIM study (PI23/01625), funded by the Carlos III Health Institute, which is aimed at implementing a diabetes prevention program in primary care settings.

Dr. Bennasar-Veny is the author of numerous scientific publications in indexed international journals and has participated in several competitive research projects, acting as principal investigator in many of them. He serves as a peer reviewer for high-impact international journals and evaluates research proposals in calls from the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) and the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR). He is also a member of the UIB Research Committee.

He was a member of the Research Ethics Committee of the Balearic Islands (CEI-IB) for over ten years (2010–2019).


Awards and Honours

  • Award for the Best National Research Career in Nursing, granted by the General Council of Nursing (2023).
  • Elected Corresponding National Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands (RAMIB) (2022), in recognition of his research career.
  • NAOS Award for the Healthy Campus project at UIB, granted by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) of the Spanish Ministry of Health (2019).


Previous Professional Experience

Before joining the university, he worked for seven years as a primary care nurse and as a trainer for the Spanish Red Cross.
