Context

The aim of this course is to study the relevance of Macroeconomics in the socio-political environment and in the tourism sector. This subject provides a discussion of selected topics in Macroeconomics. To that end, several models and theories are presented with the aimof students acquiring a set of concepts and skills of Economic Theory such as terminology, methodology, principles and theories. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to explain, distinguish, assess and make proposals on the different topics covered in the subject.

The principal objective of this course is for students to get a knowledge of the main macroeconomic aggregate variables and to analyse the effects of different economic policies on these variables. Furthermore, the course covers the basic concepts and tools needed to undertake the macroeconomic analysis of specific situations and current global economic problems.

The language of instruction for this course will be English. Students taking this course will learn specific economic /tourism-related vocabulary and develop both their productive and receptive skills in English, and therefore acquire further knowledge of the English language

There are no compulsory prerequisites. Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended to have a basic knowledge of mathematical optimization and solving systems of equations as well as the macroeconomic concepts developed in the course "Entorno Económico". Furthermore, students are expected to do some basic quantitative exercises in Microsoft Excel.

The Faculty of Tourism has approved a specific regulation on sanctions to be imposed in the event of a student performing any type of fraud either during final or midterm exams. This regulation applies to this subject. (http://fturisme.uib.cat/digitalAssets/295/295842_frau.pdf)

Teaching methodology

In order to encourage student's autonomy and individual learning, this course takes part in the Campus Extens programme aimed at flexible distance learning, which incorporates data transmission technology in university learning. Students will have online communication tools at their disposal which will allow them to contact teaching staff, exchange electronic documents and get links to the slides/exercises for individual learning.

At the beginning of the semester the subject schedule will be available to students through the UIBdigital platform. This schedule will at least include the dates for the continuous assessment exams and assignment deadlines. Furthermore, the lecturer will inform students as to whether the subject syllabus will be carried out according to the schedule or otherwise, including Campus Extens.

Specific risks and protective measures

The learning activities of this course do not entail specific health or safety risks for the students and therefore no special protective measures are needed.

Student learning assessment

Subject competences will be marked according to a list of marking procedures. The following table describes each marking procedure, the type of evaluation (recoverable or non recoverable), the marking criteria, and the percentage of the total mark of the subject for each path.

There are two paths to pass the subject (A and B). To go by path B the student must be enrolled as a part-time student or being participant of a mobility program. In order to take this path the student has to be authorized by the professor and has to sign a contract during the first month of the semester. To pass the subject following path B the student must achieve a minimum of 5 over 10 in the final exam.

In path A, the final exam (recoverable) counts as 50% of the final grade and covers the theoretical and practical content of the subject. The remaining 50% will be distributed within two midterm exams (25% each). The minimum mark on the final exam required for considering the grades of continuous assessment conducted during the semester will be 3.5 points. During the semester, the teacher could propose compulsory activities to pass the subject even though the students could not get any assessment of those activities.

Whenever a student does not take a midterm exam, their grade for this particular exam will be equal to 0. In the exceptional case of mandatory court attendance, death of an immediate family member or personal hospitalization the percentage of assessment corresponding to a midterm exam will be transferred to the final exam on a condition that sufficient evidence is supplied in reference to the reason of absence.

As a general rule, the student will only obtain the final grade of 'Not presented' when the student had handed less than one third of the activities subject to assessment

In accordance with article 33 of the Academic Regulations, "regardless of the disciplinary procedure that may be followed against the offending student , the demonstrably fraudulent performance of any of the evaluation elements included in the teaching guides of the subjects will lead, at the discretion of the teacher, to an undervaluation in the qualification that may suppose the qualification of "suspense 0" in the annual evaluation of the subject".
