Degree in Nursing (2009 syllabus)
Nursing contributes to: protecting and improving the health, safety, and wellbeing of populations; preventing illnesses and their consequences; and promoting the sustainability of the healthcare system. Nurses are experts at providing treatment for the different health needs of people, families, and social groups at different stages of life and with different states of health, as well as identifying their own abilities, coming up with methods to compensate for their own limitations by focusing on improving their shortcomings, and creating an environment favourable for personal betterment.
The nursing degree, which allows for graduates to practice the regulated profession in Spain, complies with the following regulations regarding the professional career:
- Order 12388 CIN/2134/2008 of 3 July which lays out the requirements for the verification of official university degrees that allow for the nursing profession to be carried out. Official State Gazette (BOE) No. 174.
- Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 20 October which lays out the planning and organisation required for official higher level education in Spain.
- Law 44/2003 of 21 November on planning and organisation of healthcare professions.
- Directive 2005/35/EC regarding the recognition of professional qualifications.
- Directive 77/452/EEC and 77/453/EEC regarding the profession of general care nurse.
- RD 55/2005 of 21 January. Specifications sheet proposing undergraduate university degrees.
In this way, the Healthcare Professions Law (2003) indicates that graduates from nursing programmes be able to manage, assess, and provide nursing care directed at promoting, maintaining, and recovering health, as well as preventing diseases and disabilities. The profile of general nurses addresses the social issues of promoting, improving, and restoring the health of the population by utilizing technological, scientific, and human resources in order to guide, prescribe, and provide quality care for patients, families, and the community.
Future professionals must be able to work in different social and institutional contexts on local, national, and international levels while carrying out the multidimensional responsibilities inherent in their roles. In order to effectively do so, their training and education should be based on the following pillars:
- Combining knowledge of advanced sciences, technologies, and biomedicine to make and perform ethical decisions and actions with respect to healthcare;
- Acquiring the competencies necessary for exercising their roles autonomously and as integrated members of interdisciplinary teams in order to ensure effective high-quality resolution of health problems.
- Understanding the complexity and diversity of human beings, taking differences into account as an inherent part of people who live and grow up with differing political, social, and cultural backgrounds. Nurses must understand that health determinants shape the need for treatment and the way in which such treatments should be provided.
- Developing a critical and creative point of view that guides them towards high-quality work and research.
