Specific-Training Activities

Attendance to research seminars
Objective
Attendance to seminars given by researchers linked to the Ph.D. Program as well as by renowned guest scientists (preferably from foreign research centers).

Control Procedure
For each of the attended seminars the student must produce an attendance certificate duly signed by the organizer stating the title, date and duration of the seminar. These documents will be included in the Student Activity Document.

Seminars to be given by the Ph.D. student
Objective
To practice the preparation, presentation and public defense of the research carried out during each academic year in front of the other students and faculty members of the Ph.D. program. The activity will take place under the supervision and guidance of the thesis supervisor.

Control Procedure
The thesis supervisor must certify and evaluate the seminars given by the student. All relevant details (date, title, etc.) must be quoted on the Student Activity Book.

Tutorials
Objective
To hold tutorial sessions attended by the student and his/her thesis director. The aim is to go deeper into the scientific knowledge related to the research topic, the management of software technologies and environments requested to conduct the research, design and analyze experiments, and discuss and disseminate the research results.

Compliance with the tutorial plan shall be credited annually through a joint statement issued by the thesis supervisor and the student.

Preparation of a scientific communication
Objective
To acquire skills and experience in science communication. The activity will first involve the preparation and submission of an abstract related to the research field of the thesis. It also includes the public presentation in a conference, meeting or workshop at a national or international level.

Control Procedure
Regarding the preparation of the communication: certification of the thesis supervisor and copy of the accompanying text (abstract/paper). Regarding the presentation: certificate of attendance, program of the event or records showing the presentation. They will all be included in the Student Activity Book.
Mobility
* A student can be exempted from the presentation (not from the preparation) of the communication if he/she duly accredits the lack of local scientific meetings and the impossibility to get the funding needed to attend meetings held in other cities.
Preparation and writing of a paper for a JCR indexed journal
Objective
To acquire additional training in the dissemination of results from the publication of at least one scientific paper related to the topic of thesis. The paper must be published in a JCR indexed journal.

Publication reference or letter of acceptance from the publisher will be produced to comply with the activity.

Research stay at another research center
Objective
To carry out a stay at a research facility outside the Balearic Islands. The aim is manifold: the main one is to go deeper into one or more aspects of the research topic of the thesis in collaboration with the hosting group; other aims are to enrich the student's overall training in terms of ethnic and cultural diversity through its interaction with researchers and Ph.D. students from other countries.

Control Procedure
The student will write a short report summarizing the activities and achievements. The report will be approved by the supervisor and included in the Student Activity Document.
Mobility
The funds of the research groups that support the program, funds from the UIB Research Support Program and scholarships associated with different PhD grants (FPU, FPI, JAE-CSIC, CAIB, ...) will be used to fund the travel and accommodation of Ph.D. students. They can also apply for travel grants from the Ministry's programs (for the mobility of students of Ph.D. Programs awarded with the Mention to Excellence).
