Interdisciplinary and specific educational activities

The Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program in Marine Ecology will recommend to doctoral students the completion of a minimum of 60 compulsory hours of the common offer of cross-training activities (courses of similar characteristics offered in other Universities could be valued as well). It is also recommended to do them during the first year of studies for full-time students or between the first and second year for part-time students.

Specific-Training Activities

Sample collection abroad an oceanographic vessel (BO)
Objective
Designed to prepare the doctoral student in on-site research, collecting data on physicochemical and biological variables through the sensors used in oceanography (CTD, fluorosonde, etc.), in the methodologies for collecting samples for chemical analysis and biotic communities , and in the preparation of the same for further studies in the laboratory.

This activity must be carried out during the first year of studies for full-time and part-time students.
Control Procedure
The supervision of the campaign and the evaluation of the respective reports will be carried out by the thesis directors. The work of the students on board the BO will be supervised by a researcher from one of the three centers participating in the Doctoral Programme.

Objective
Acquire the ability to perform and manage bibliographic searches on a research topic in different public and private bibliographic databases.

Attendance to research seminars
Objective
Attendance to seminars given by researchers linked to the Ph.D. Program as well as by renowned guest scientists (preferably from foreign research centers).

Control Procedure
For each of the attended seminars the student must produce an attendance certificate duly signed by the organizer stating the title, date and duration of the seminar. These documents will be included in the Student Activity Document.

Preparation and writing of a paper
Objetive
To acquire additional training in the dissemination of results from the publication of at least one scientific paper related to the topic of thesis.
