The Master's in Applied Biotechnology teaches advanced concepts in different areas of biotechnology and the environment, as well as some applied aspects related to creating companies, protection through patents, valuing companies, obtaining funding and negotiating licences. In turn, this Master's programme offers subjects that enable students to choose two different specialities: one linked to health and the other related to the environment.
The health pathway offers subjects that enable students to become familiar with the biotechnology sector where more jobs are created and more money is moved, with the implications this may have for the national economy. Meanwhile, the biotechnology and the environment pathway covers ever more necessary aspects for maintaining a balance between human activities and the environment.
These two areas are highly topical and designed for a broad array of students.
What skills will you acquire?
The proposed Master's programme particularly focuses on students' comprehensive multidisciplinary training. The main aspects are stimulating students' critical ability and the capacity to assess and resolve problems to thus become independent specialists with decision-making skills in their professional and scientific career.
The biotechnology and health speciality is a training pathway that offers students the chance to acquire quality education in the most up-to-date areas of biomedicine. For example, subjects such as designing and developing drugs, cell signalling and pharmacological regulation provide training in a field of application in the pharmacology industry. The use of the most recent molecular techniques in the genetics field will be thoroughly looked at in subjects such as molecular diagnosis and gene therapy, or anthropology and forensic genetics.
The biotechnology and the environment speciality offers students the chance to specialise in sustainable management of both protected areas and natural spaces, and agricultural systems, including recovering degraded lands. The speciality emphasises efficient management of water resources - a key element in Mediterranean climate areas - and the use of the latest technology. The training provides students with outstanding practical content that will enable them to get to know these technologies first-hand and, thus, easily use them in their future professional careers.
What career opportunities will you have?
The main aim of the postgraduate programme is to train specialised scientists and professionals in the fields of biotechnology for health and the environment, as well as in academic fields in those areas, to be able to work across different sectors in industry and academe in environmental, health and academic services at public and private research centres.
High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built. In the results you can find reports on official study programmes.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes .
The Master's programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the section on quality .
